Trust

Trust is having a strong feeling of confident belief in somebody, suspending any doubt that the one we believe in is truthful and completely honest.
This has 3 functions: 1. It creates a sense of belonging, 2. it makes the ways of acting between us be predictable 3. and it makes it easier to work, communicate and live together.

Trust is something we wish to preserve, because if we lose it, we lose all in a relationship. Trust seems to come before love. We don’t have the courage to love somebody, if we don’t trust. Therefore it is something valuable that we care for and nurse, sometimes also challenge: can I still trust you? More important than: do you still love me?

We feel lonely, when we trust in nobody. We can be in lack of trust, for instance if our society is corrupted. It is painful, when we believe that who we really are have to be hidden, because we don´t want to risk being rejected, cheated upon or neglected.
We can learn to behave untrue. Untruthfulness can also be grounded in lack of self-esteem. A man can seem trustworthy and we show basic trust in him, when he inspires confidence to us.

Also trust can break: Don’t let me down or be unfaithful to me, then I don’t trust in you anymore. Meaning then I also cannot love you anymore. You can hurt me, but it is worse, if you break down my trust in you.

Trust seems to walk hand-in-hand with respect. I tell you my most shameful secrets and trust that you will respect my wish of never tell anybody else.
We don’t trust, when somebody lie to or play games with us, manipulate or control everything. Then basis for trust is not present and we cannot love either. We can trust in society, culture and governments, believe that a system is fair. Or we don´t trust.
We can trust in life, be convinced that life will be good to us and bring exactly what we need, also when times are hard.

Trust is of great importance in sexuality, in intimate situations where we express our selves as to nobody else: I trust you, so I give to you all of me. Trust is basis for true friendships. Without trust, we cannot be friends. Trust is the glue, where friends can be very different in interests, education, backgrounds, culture or age, but because we trust and care a friendship can be a strong bond, – sometimes stronger than family or a love-relation.

When we trust, we accept our own vulnerability and we also accept others. In trust we don’t doubt that we can be and act, as who we really are in company with those, we trust. Trust allows us to relax. Trust can be blind and we can lose it.
We can build up confidence between us over time or a person can inspire confidence by first moment, we meet. Then we trust. Being in trust with each other we have a sense of belonging, this feels good. Almost like love.
